Principal Counsel and Founder — a disputes practitioner with over fifteen years at the Bar.
Divij Kumar is an advocate with over a decade and a half of experience in commercial and constitutional litigation, arbitration, and insolvency proceedings across the country. He launched Chambers of Divij Kumar in 2026 as an independent practice dedicated to offering clients direct, partner-led representation before India’s superior courts and tribunals.
A graduate of the Army Institute of Law, Mohali (Class of 2010), Divij began his career at PSA Legal Counsellors in New Delhi, where he practised corporate law for three years. It was there that a senior’s observation — that a draftsman cannot truly know his clauses until he has seen them interpreted in Court — first drew him to the Bar.
His litigation career began in the chambers of Mr. Sudhir K. Makkar, Senior Advocate — an early mentor who encouraged his juniors to lead cases of their own, to conduct evidence, and to argue interim and final hearings on their feet. He thereafter served briefly as independent counsel before joining Luthra and Luthra Law Offices in 2017, where he rose through the firm over seven years, ultimately becoming Partner.
In 2024 Divij joined CMS INDUSLAW as Partner in the disputes resolution practice, relocating with his team from Luthra. Two years later, in March 2026, he established his independent Chambers.
He is recognised for strategic acumen in shareholder disputes, corporate structuring, insolvency matters, and civil litigation before the High Court and the Supreme Court. His appearances span the Supreme Court of India, various High Courts, the NCLT and NCLAT, and the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.
His practice has spanned significant constitutional challenges — including the vires of levies of stamp duty and of water tax imposed by the States of Sikkim and Himachal Pradesh on hydro power undertakings — and foundational insolvency matters, including what stands as the first acquisition of a company under the Insolvency & Bankruptcy Code by a Public Sector Undertaking in India. He has also acted in commercial arbitrations arising out of shareholder disputes, joint-venture partnership disputes over development contracts, and works contracts in the hydro power sector.
Beyond his commercial practice, Divij remains deeply committed to pro bono work, including representation before the Supreme Court on matters concerning victims’ rights and access to statutory compensation schemes.
